As a Resident of Costa Rica for the past 15 years (originally from Belize) I can really see lots of changes that have been made to this once laid-back country. I have lived in San Jose in places such as Moravia, Escazu, La Sabana, Rohrmoser, Pavas, Tibas, Tambor, Limon, Puerto Viejo, Tambor, Montezuma, Mal Pais, Santa Teresa, Santa Cruz, Samara… You name them! Something that really draws my attention are the huge investments that have been made since. Everything is going up here in Costa. From gasoline to diesel, food, electricity and of course buildings.
I see buildings going up everywhere I go in Costa Rica. From Jaco to Escazu to Santa Teresa. It is kinda scary to me. I wish we still had Costa Rica the way it was when I first met Costa Rica in 1994 . But we all need these investors to come in and make change. I feel good when I see an eco friendly construction instead of just any cracker coming in my country to make money and destroying our most prized resource of all — nature !
All these huge upscaled buildings going up without the correct planning to be nature friendly and they only make more money and dont give any back to nature, actually destroying it. I have seen some hotels in places like Tamarindo A.K.A. TamaGringo, where their sewage just flows to nearby rivers and eventually to the ocean. I refuse to bathe near any of these big hotels anymore. I much rather smaller beach towns where we can still enjoy Costa Rica’s Beautiful nature.
Sometimes I wonder… could this be like Jaco 2020 ?
Who knows.

So the word is now that Puerto Viejo is not going to have a marina. Appearantly the locals were against it, and now the marina will be built in Limon.
The reason that Limon has been avoided when it comes to building more commercial outlets, is the media coverage of crime. Limon has a bad reputation. Limon’s reputation has also affected tourism in Puerto Viejo, and me having been there twice I can tell you that Puerto Viejo is very safe.
Investors are currently looking at Puerto Viejo and people who go there realize that the area is nothing like what we have seen about Limon on TV, Limon the city, not the province which Puerto Viejo is a part of.
There are two other areas where marinas are going to be built, and those are Tambor (on the Nicoya Peninsula) and Cabuya (on the same peninsula as well).
Tambor is an upscale neighborhood featuring golf courses, casinos and high-end hotels.
Cabuya is a sleepy little beachtown located next to Montezuma with great surf.
The timeline is not certain. This can take many years. But those of you who are into investing and interested in starting a business in Costa Rica, need to consider the changes ahead in certain areas to determine where the best location for you to do business might be.

When I decide where to move, I look at the place and imagine it a few years from now. Where is it headed, what do people feel when they’re here? Those are questions upon whichs answers I do decide whether or not the place is worth investing my time and business in.
Costa Rica has been on the forefront of the international real estate market for quite some time now, and from what I am told, on the Pacific side it’s now time to build, and on the Caribbean and southern side it’s time to buy.
The price of land on the Pacific side went from about $20 a square meter (take this times 10 for square feet) to about $80. Major development is on the way, and on the Caribbean side investors and private well-to-does are starting to buy up land which provides hope to becoming a prime investment anybody with enough money to acquire it can make.
What I like about Costa Rica is the stability of the government. I also like the fact that Costa Rica has so much to offer for everyone. Costa Rica is and will remain an ideal vacation spot for everybody, but especially Americans and Canadians since the country is close enough to head down quick and flights are fairly cheap.
What does indicate a huge boom is the fact that many of those who come here do have the money to build their dream, yet eco friendly building is in. Not to destroy the environment which provides such a great alternative to what we are all used to is something worth striving for. The natural habitat needs to be preserved, so investors are encouraged to build eco friendly resorts rather than highrises.
Time will tell what will happen.
Costa Rica is a goldmine.
Those who are down on their luck in the U.S. should consider giving Costa Rica a try and experience this country in its developmental stage before the opportunities are gone.
I believe that Costa Rica has a bright future ahead and I would like to see more good people make their way here in order to prosper and help make a difference when it comes to doing business in a way which benefits them as well as their newly found community.
Feel free to ask me questions and let us know what brought you here.

I have been living in Costa Rica for about 2 years. I remember coming here in October of 2006 and the first month I was thinking “Why did I come here, I like heat, beaches, surf. I feel like I’m in Oregon sitting inside wishing the rain would stop.”
Then after about a month from one day to the next the sun came out and it stayed out.
Until May.
Then the rain started again and in 2007 it ended about October 31st.
Right now it rains. We’re ready to head to the beach to sell some properties and start building, but we will wait a little bit longer so the sun will hopefully shine bright on our future ventures.
If YOU are planning to visit Costa Rica, December to February is THE best time to do that.
On the caribbean side the rainy season is not that bad, but there are the surf spots of the Nicoya Peninsula which get hit hard.
The tourist season is about to start and we’re looking forward to seeing happy faces enjoying their overdue vacation in an environment where the surf never ends and the sun won’t stop shining!
